Oxytocin

Description

Oxytocin is a nine-amino-acid neuropeptide synthesised in the supraoptic and paraventricular hypothalamic nuclei.
Mechanism: Binds oxytocin receptors on uterine and mammary smooth muscle to drive contraction and milk ejection. Central oxytocin signalling modulates social bonding, anxiety, trust and pair-bonding behaviours.
Research findings: Clinically used for labour induction and post-partum haemorrhage. Intranasal research has documented modulation of social cognition, trust behaviours and anxiety. Reference compound in social neuroscience and smooth-muscle research.
Handling: Lyophilized peptide. Store sealed at -20°C for long-term stability or 2-8°C short-term. Reconstitute with bacteriostatic water or 0.6% acetic acid as appropriate to the molecule.
