Description
SS-31 (Elamipretide, Bendavia, MTP-131) is a synthetic D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH2 tetrapeptide that selectively concentrates in the inner mitochondrial membrane.
Mechanism: Binds cardiolipin, stabilising the electron transport chain super-complexes and reducing reactive oxygen species production. Restores ATP synthesis in damaged mitochondria without uncoupling oxidative phosphorylation.
Research findings: Phase 2 trials in primary mitochondrial myopathy (MMPOWER) reported improved six-minute walk distance. Ischaemia-reperfusion studies in heart failure and Barth syndrome demonstrated functional improvements. SS-31 remains the leading mitochondria-targeted peptide reference.
Handling: Lyophilized peptide. Store sealed at -20°C for long-term stability or 2-8°C short-term. Reconstitute with bacteriostatic water or 0.6% acetic acid as appropriate to the molecule.
